Mass Effect 3
So, I just finished the Mass Effect 3 single-player campaign. Took me roughly 25 hours on ‘Insanity’ difficulty, and have a bit more hours on multiplayer. The game was outstanding all around, although the ending was a letdown.
I’m led to assume that the game only has three predetermined endings since that’s all I was able to choose from. The choices were: Destroy the Reapers and all synthetic life, take control of the Reapers, or initiate synergy between organic and synthetic life, creating an entirely new life form. I decided to destroy the Reapers, for the reason being I felt that justice needed to be served for the millions of the lives lost. After reading others experiences online, I found out the alternate choices were nearly the same. The exception being, with my choice, is that there is a tease at the end that Shepard is still alive.
In all the games of the series, I was allowed to make choices, and in this game particularly, I was collecting “War Assets” to prepare against the Reapers. Now, I understand these assets were mainly to attain a high ‘Battle Readiness’ rating before heading into war. Although, to my disappointment, none of these assets were shown during the ending. I was hoping that an individual or group of war assets would alter the ending in some form. Also, the characters I leveled and promoted in multiplayer didn’t make difference, let alone an appearance, either. I just felt that they could of done a bit more to make these assets more meaningful. My roommate had an excellent idea of being able to control these war assets, allowing the player to strategically coordinate the attacks of each individual asset (like a real-time strategy game). I would think there would be dozens of endings, considering all the choices made throughout the series, but alas, they sadly made no difference in this one.
All in all, I have no problem with the ending’s story. Every movie, book, or game can’t have perfect endings. It’s just that the endings should have been heavily influences with the choices and tasks we chose to complete; just as it was advertised and done in previous games.
